The Epstein Case: A Horrendous Intersection of Gender and Class

On June 14, 2019, a wealthy man arrived in the city of Paris on a private jet. He owned a luxury apartment there and hence, this was not his first visit there. He enjoyed the beauty of the city of love and... some of his last days of life. On his return journey to his home country, a 6 to 7 hour flight on his private jet, he landed at Teterboro Airport on July 6, 2019, in New Jersey, USA. The moment he stepped foot on American soil, the federal agents arrested him and took him into custody. The next month, on August 10, he was found dead in his prison cell. Who was this man? Why was he arrested?

A Brief Account

It is fairly obvious from the title that the man was Jeffrey Epstein, a multimillionaire and a friend to the powerful and the billionaires. Most accurately, he was a parasite! He was born in "the land of the free", the United States of America, specifically in Brooklyn, New York. Well, who does not know about this man today? You must be really detached from politics to not know who he is if you are an American. Recently, the entire case involving his participation in sex trafficking of young women and minors has been pretty much everywhere in the news and on social media.

A Timeline for Context (Sources: NPR and Britannica)

  • The 1980s: This was the period marking the rise of Jeffrey. He was a partner at Wall Street firm Bear Stearns initially in 1980. Slowly, he began running his own financial firm, targeting ultra rich clients by 1988.

  • 1998: He purchased the Manhattan property for $20 million and his first US Virgin Island, Little St. James, for $7.95 million. These became the bases for his trafficking operations.

  • The 1990s and 2000s: He began working with powerful and influential men including Donald Trump, President Bill Clinton, Michael Jackson and Prince Andrew.

  • March 2005: A criminal investigation began against him in Palm Beach, Florida. Parents of a 14 year old girl reported that she was paid for a massage. In short, she was sexually abused. Also, a reminder that a minor's consent is not considered to be a consent. Further investigation revealed that her abuse had been going on since 2002.

  • July 19, 2006: A Palm Beach County grand jury indicted Epstein on one state felony charge of solicitation of prostitution. However, law enforcement officials believed this single charge did not adequately represent the full scope of his criminal conduct and referred the matter to federal authorities for further investigation. What a joke!

  • May 2007: Prosecutors prepared a comprehensive draft indictment detailing approximately 60 criminal charges against Epstein, accompanied by a detailed summary of the evidence collected during the investigation.

  • July 2007: Epstein's legal team negotiated with federal prosecutors in the Southern District of Florida, then led by U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta, who later served as President Trump's Labor Secretary. The prosecution offered to conclude their investigation in exchange for Epstein pleading guilty to two state level charges, accepting prison time, registering as a sex offender, and establishing a compensation fund for victims. The deal was indeed a disgrace to the justice system of America.

  • June 30, 2008: He pleaded guilty to state charges of solicitation of prostitution with minors and was sentenced to just 18 months in prison and allowed to leave for 12 hours a day for work. Capitalism indeed provides choice.... but to the billionaires!

  • July 7, 2008: A victim filed a federal lawsuit asserting that she and other victims had been denied their legal rights under the Crime Victims' Rights Act because they were not notified that prosecutors had reached a plea agreement with Epstein.

  • July 22, 2009: Guess what happened? This man was released. Not even 13 months were over!

  • September 2009: Two years after the non prosecution agreement was signed, a Florida judge ruled that documents granting Epstein federal immunity should be unsealed and made available to the public, responding to legal challenges brought by victims and media organizations.

  • 2010: Multiple lawsuits were filed against him by other victims.

  • September 21, 2015: Virginia Roberts Giuffre filed a defamation lawsuit against Ghislaine Maxwell, a long time associate of Epstein, after Maxwell publicly denied Giuffre's allegations of being victimized in a sex trafficking operation. Maxwell was later found guilty of assisting Jeffrey, as revealed in 2021.

  • May 2017: Maxwell settles Giuffre's lawsuit. Later, journalist Julie K. Brown and the Miami Herald filed motions to unseal records from the case.

  • November 28, 2018: The Miami Herald published an extensive investigative series examining Epstein's crimes and the role of then U.S. Attorney Acosta in negotiating Epstein's lenient plea agreement.

  • December 4, 2018: Epstein reached a settlement in a defamation lawsuit with attorney Bradley Edwards, who had represented multiple women alleging abuse by Epstein when they were minors.

  • July 6, 2019: The date I mentioned in the beginning. This man was finally arrested for real.

  • August 10, 2019: Another date I mentioned above, when he died. The New York City chief medical examiner ruled it a suicide, but many consider this a lie. He was probably killed by powerful and wealthy people.

  • August 27, 2019: U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman held a hearing on a motion to dismiss the indictment against Epstein. In a remarkable move, he allowed victims to provide testimony in court. Many women came forward that day.

Some Recent Developments

During the elections held on November 5, 2024, Donald Trump was elected as the president. During his MAGA campaign, one of his promises was to release the Epstein files and bring justice to the victims.

But in the 1990s, as previously stated, Jeffrey and Donald were close partners. They attended parties together and Donald visited Jeffrey on his private island many times. Over time, more than 25 women have accused Donald Trump of sexual misconduct. He has denied all accusations. Although his misogynist remarks, even against his daughter, are well documented, and the enormous number of accusations would be shocking if all false. So it is obvious that this man cannot be trusted. Yes, I know he just signed the legislature to release the files. I am coming to that.

2025 has been pretty chaotic when it comes to the Epstein case. Some key dates, obtained from Britannica, for you are:

  • February 21, 2025: Attorney General Bondi says the Epstein client list is "on my desk."

  • February 27, 2025: MAGA supporters receive Epstein files binders from Bondi.

  • May 2025: Bondi informs Trump that his name appears in the unreleased Epstein files. Trump has denied this.

  • June 5, 2025: Elon Musk posts on Twitter (now X): "@realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!" This sparked the Trump-Musk feud which lasted from June to September.

  • July 5, 2025: Elon Musk announced the American Party and vowed to release the Epstein files.

  • July 7, 2025: Justice Department releases a memo saying that no other documents will be made public.

  • September 8, 2025: The Epstein estate releases a birthday book which includes a drawing and birthday wishes that appear to be signed by Trump.

  • September 26, 2025: Democrats on the House Oversight Committee released documents mentioning Elon Musk. He has been very quiet since then.

  • November 12, 2025: Some 23,000 pages of documents from the Epstein estate are released, including emails that indicate Trump had knowledge of the nature of Epstein's actions, which Trump has denied.

  • November 18, 2025: The House passes the Epstein Files Transparency Act by a vote of 427 to 1, and the Senate unanimously agreed to send the legislation to Trump for his signature.

  • November 19, 2025: Trump signs the legislation authorizing the release of the Epstein files.

The Gender and Class Dynamics

Now let us discuss the sociological perspectives of this entire case. When we talk about the intersection of class with gender, generally we discuss underpaid labor at factories and the unpaid labor at home by women. But this case is pretty unique and tragic. There was no physical labor exploitation, but the most integral part of a woman, her body, was subject to exploitation.

Giuffre, the victim I talked about before, claimed she was "passed around like a platter of fruit," basically treated like an object. And among whom? The wealthy and powerful men, obviously. A man with ego is dangerous. An egoistic man with entitlement is fatal and monstrous.

Also, insights into the victims reveal that many were underage, hence vulnerable, often coming from poverty struck regions. This was a factor exploited by privileged men, with power imbalance being central. One victim, a financially poor dancer, accepted money to support her mother. Another victim, Maria Farmer and her sister Annie Farmer, were reportedly tight on money, and both of them were raised by a single mother with lack of child support. Jeffrey exploited their vulnerability too. Carolyn, another financially disadvantaged victim, who was 14 when she was first introduced to Jeffrey. She would initially receive $300 cash payments per visit; everything was driven by desperation.

Jeffrey's team also coerced many women and girls within the circle to recruit other victims, painting everyone as "willing participants." In case someone forgot, a minor cannot consent and hence it is rape! Consent taken via force is rape!

Both Republicans and Democrats are complicit in these crimes. Bill Clinton, a Democrat, and Donald Trump, a Republican, are often accused. That is why those who want justice hardly trust anyone. Even with the files at the brink of being released, many speculate that names of Republicans, especially Donald Trump, were possibly removed.

On the other side of the coin, however, is longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell, a woman who is currently serving a 20 year prison sentence. But if anyone wants to blame her, let me remind you that Jeffrey is, and will always be, the primary enabler. The purpose of highlighting her specifically is to acknowledge her involvement as a criminal, an exceptional example of a woman carrying misogyny thereby complicit in harming other women, not simply because of her biological sex.

Final Thoughts

Misogyny and sexism are rampant in America. Most of the progressive countries, even African countries, have had at least one President or leader who was a woman, but the US has somehow failed to do that. The inability to accept women in power indirectly enables the cycle of violence against women and cases like Epstein's. The Epstein case reveals what happens when wealth insulates men from accountability. Rich, powerful men exploited vulnerable girls and women for years while the justice system looked the other way. Prosecutors made deals. Judges gave lenient sentences. Powerful friends stayed silent or complicit. And the victims? They were dismissed, paid off or ignored. This case is not an anomaly; it is a symptom of a system built to protect male power and wealth at the expense of women and girls. Until we dismantle the structures that allow billionaires to buy their way out of consequences, until we believe and center victims, until we hold the wealthy and powerful to the same standards as everyone else, there will be more Jeffrey Epsteins. The files may be released, but justice delayed is justice denied. And for the countless girls and women he trafficked and abused, no amount of transparency can undo the harm. What we can do is ensure it never happens again by building a world where women's bodies are not commodities, where wealth does not equal immunity and where power is held accountable.
